Happy 2024 NYC! And to welcome us into the new year, Mother Nature has decided to bring us the gift of snow with the year’s first possible snowstorm headed our way this weekend.
Meteorologists have been updating their forecasts each day ahead of this weekend to prepare everyone for possible snowy conditions on the East Coast. As of Saturday morning, a graph from The New York Times shows the possibility of anywhere from 1-2 inches of snow in parts of the city (up to 4″ worst case scenario, according to the National Weather Service), with upstate New York receiving anything from 12-18 inches!
It’s been nearly two years since NYC saw its last considerable snowfall. In total, NYC only saw 2.3 inches of snow from winter 2022 to 2023—and we’re not the only city on the Eastern Seaboard that’s had quite the snowless streak! Philadelphia (703) and Baltimore (704) both haven’t seen more than 1″ of snow in 700+ days.
Forecasts gauge the weekend storm will begin on Saturday (we’re already seeing some flurries here in NYC) and carry on through to possibly Tuesday. According to Storm Team 4, northwest New Jersey, the Hudson Valley, the Catskills and Poconos have the highest chances of snowfall.
Storm Team 4 warns major travel impacts later this evening, as snow is expected to pick up in the afternoon. According to the National Weather Service, NYC could see possible snowfall rates at ½ to 1”/hr from 5pm to 10pm tonight.
NYC Emergency Management warns residents to be cautious and expect a wintry mix overnight. Keep checking back for the latest updates on the first snow of 2024.
