There are some huge movies coming to the big screen this summer. New York’s very own Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles return with the sequel Out of the Shadows, Independence Day 2: Resurgence will be invading and the Ghostbusters are opening for business again in the Big Apple.
Problem is, you don’t want to be stuck inside a dark cinema on a beautiful summer’s day. You want picnic blankets, ice-cream cones and a comfy lawn chair while you watch an acclaimed flick outside in the open air. And of course, you want to do it on board an enormous aircraft carrier.
Luckily, NYC knows you are entitled to such things and so plays host to The Intrepid Summer Movie Series, an annual open air cinema event held on the flight deck of the Intrepid Museum’s aircraft carrier home.
The program kick starts with Top Gun (for obvious reasons) and follows up with the recent Star Trek remake. Then things take a turn with the kind of devil-may-care attitude towards chronology that would send your average Trekkie’s head into a spin as we jump to Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home and then back to Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. The 2016 schedule also features Galaxy Quest and Iron Giant.
