The sun is out, the days are getting longer and though it’s not officially spring yet, it’s the perfect time to plan your summer travels! Of course if you want to go international, you’ll need to make sure your passport is in order first.
If you are applying for a U.S. passport for the first time, or need one rushed because of a trip within the next three weeks, you’ll need to make an in-person visit at an agency or facility. But how does that work and when exactly should you? Here’s everything you need to know!
First, what’s the difference between a passport acceptance facility and passport agency?
A passport acceptance facility can be any government office that accepts passport applications for the U.S. Department of State — often post offices, libraries, clerks of court, and other types of offices. You can submit your application in-person here. This would be for someone who is applying for a passport for the first time, or someone who is renewing their passport but is ineligible to do so by mail or online.
A passport agency (or center) is completely separate and is run fully by the U.S. Department of State. If you need a rushed passport, for example, you would need an appointment at an agency, not an acceptance facility. Agencies are where all applications go to be processed.
How do I find a passport agency?
The easiest way to find a passport agency near you is to utilize the map on the Department of State Travel website. It’s important to remember that you cannot just walk into a passport agency to get help. You must make an appointment in advance. This can be done by phone or online, depending on your travel situation (if you’re traveling in less than three weeks) and if you have already submitted an application or not. Note: agencies are fewer and farther between; there may be only be one hours from where you live.
