On Tuesday evening (November 22) anyone who happened to get onto the car was made a Thanksgiving dinner plate—and yes, there was a full turkey onboard the L-train being carved up and doled out to straphangers! There was also mashed potatoes, collard greens, mac and cheese, and (by the looks of it) plenty of bubbly beverages to go around.
This wonderful act of kindness was courtesy of Chef Bea from Bea’s Kitchen in East New York, according to Jada Yuan who posted the below Instagram video.
Back in 2019, the idea was thought up by New York comedian Jodell Lewis, who stated that the act of kindness was about “giving back and bringing good food to everyone this Thanksgiving holiday.”
New Yorkers are showing their admiration for the train-style Thanksgiving meal, leaving comments on social media accounts who shared footage of the feast along the likes of, “I love this city so much,” and “This is so sweet. This might be some peoples only thanksgiving meal ❤️ it’s so nice they did this.”
The train eventually stalled at a track and the conductor had all the riders get off before taking off with the caterers still inside–but that wasn’t before everyone got a full plate of delicious food!
For those of us who sadly missed it, we’ll just have to wait until next year as it seems that now that the Covid-19 pandemic is mostly behind this this feast will continue to be an annual event. Just be sure to get your hands on some of the mac and cheese–rumor has it it was amazing!
