Many New Yorkers were caught off guard–and pretty angry to say the least–this weekend after the Empire State Building lit up in support of a sports team that definitely isn’t based in New York…
Sunday, January 29, the Empire State Building lit up in green and white “in honor of the Eagles NFC Championship Victory,” they stated on Twitter.
To make matters worse, the Eagles had just recently beat the New York Giants a week prior to the ESB showing their support for the rival team, thus ending the Giants’ playoff run.
According to the building’s tower lights calendar, it was planned to light the building up in colors of the winning teams for both AFC and NFL…however they clearly didn’t think about the repercussions of a scorned New York sports fan.
And boy did the fans make their distaste in the building’s color choice known!
According to Mark Gooden on Twitter, an angry mob of New Yorkers marched straight to the ESB, demanding the building lighting be changed from green. And even further than that–they also called for the person who tweeted about the building’s color choice to be fired.
Other disgruntled fans stayed home but hopped on Twitter to blow off some steam, tweeting their disgust with the decision.
NYC’s Department of Sanitation put their two cents in as well, making light of the situation by telling NYers to “pretend it’s green and white for #NewYorksStrongest.” They added, “We take out the trash every day…and next year, that’ll include the Eagles.”
Later in the night, the tower’s colors changed to red and gold in honor of the Kansas City Chiefs’ win. However, fans didn’t take this color choice to heart quite as much.
At the end of the day we definitely learned something from this situation–never mess with a New York sports fan.
But seriously ESB…what the hell?!
