If you look toward the Empire State Building this week, it will not be lit up in colors honoring something, or even its classic white.
Instead it will be completely dark, in remembrance of George Floyd, a Black man who was killed last week by police in Minneapolis.
They made the announcement on Twitter on Monday, writing:
“The Empire State Building is dark tonight to recognize the tragic murder of George Floyd, injustice in all of its forms and all of its victims, and to urge an end to the damage to our great city and its people. There is enough loss and sorrow already.”
It appears they have continued to do so each night thus far this week, although it isn’t clear if they will continue through the weekend.
But make sure you don’t walk anywhere to see it—an 8pm curfew has now been established for NYC.
Before this week, the building had been lighting up in red to recognize the “heartbeat of America” during the fight against COVID-19, along with a 5 minute moment of darkness for all those who have been lost to the virus.
