Economy Candy is a NYC staple and sugary paradise for candy lovers! The spot first opened as a shoe and hat repair shop that featured a candy cart outside. When the Depression hit, the candy cart began to bring in more business than the repair shop, so Morris “Moishe” Cohen and his brother switched selling directions to focus on candy, chocolate, gift baskets and more.
Now run by the third generation of the Cohen family, it’s earned the coveted title of New York’s oldest retail candy shop, as it turned 85 over the weekend.
The shop celebrated with free tastings, giveaways, and games. Local businesses came together to honor their aging neighbor as Serafina LES, Verlaine, Welcome to the Johnson’s and Pretty Ricky’s all offered Economy Candy-inspired cocktails to celebrate.
And though their brick-and-mortar is a must-visit for any New Yorker with a sweet tooth, they also do online orders through their website! Which means you can send a piece of New York to anyone in the country.
The historic NYC business began offering online orders during the pandemic, when they had to shut down their store for about 18 months. Luckily, Economy Candy had their grand reopening in September 2021 but kept the delivery option in place.
You can order candies individually (the site has “old time favorites,” “candy and chocolate through the decades” and you can ever search by color!), or one of their delightful “Candy Care Packages.”
Place an order to stock up for yourself, or send a care package to someone else who needs a sweet surprise. You can choose between a basic pack, combo pack, merch pack, health nut pack, or movie night pack. They include a combination of candy, chocolate, gummies, hard candy or nuts, dried fruits, etc.
They even make speciality ones for holidays, like Valentine’s Day and Easter.
Either way, you’re supporting an iconic NYC store! Browse the endless options here.
Of course, you can also now visit Economy Candy in person and take in the 2,000 varieties of candy for yourself.
