Set in the 1980’s, Drinking In America’s story and themes are still relevant in 2023! The show will take place this month at the Minetta Lane Theatre and previews begin on March 10th. The play officially starts on March 19th with a closing date of April 13th.
Drinking In America is presented by Audible Theater and tells the story of the complexities of male fragility and masculinity. Above all else, it challenges society’s notion of what it means to “be a man.” It also looks at how society can break a man down.
The show stars actor Andre Royo, known for his roles in popular shows such as “The Wire” and “Empire.” The play shows the need for men who want a sense of community (not centered around drinking) and Royo’s performance brings this to life. Drinking in America was written and originated by actor and playwright Eric Bogosian and directed by Mark Armstrong.
The play will run at the Minetta Lane Theatre located between MacDougal & 6th Avenue. Audible Theater will release Drinking in America exclusively on Audible, delivering the theater experience to millions of listeners around the world. Audible members will have access to discounted play tickets, and tickets (for non-members) start at $36.16.
“‘Drinking in America’ leaves a hangover of outrage that a theatergoer can’t easily shake,” said New York Times writer Frank Rich in an in-depth review of the play back in 1986. The 2023 version is set to evoke a rollercoaster of emotion, especially with Armstrong, Bogosian and Royo at the helm of the production.
