For more than a century, everyday New Yorkers were strictly barred from setting foot inside the Domino Sugar Refinery.
The sprawling industrial fortress along the East River kept its gates locked tight while churning out millions of pounds of sugar, leaving locals to look at the water through heavy chain-link fences.
But that closed-off era is officially ancient history.
Following the debut of Domino Square in recent years, the newly unlocked space sitting right at the base of those iconic brick smokestacks is currently hosting a massive city-wide summer celebration, and every single event on the calendar is 100% free.

A forbidden factory floor turns into a theater-in-the-round
While the outer boardwalk at Domino Park has been a neighborhood staple for a few years, the final interior puzzle piece was kept under wraps until recently.
Designed by the landscape architects behind the High Line, Domino Square was engineered as a sunken, theater-in-the-round civic plaza.
Instead of blocking the neighborhood out, the tiered architectural seating creates a natural arena that invites everyone in.
Now that July is in full swing, park officials have rolled out an expanded cultural and community lineup that takes over the square, the adjacent Flex Field, and the waterfront promenade.
According to the park, it’s one of the most dramatic civic transformations in Brooklyn history, turning private factory grounds into a sprawling open-air stage.
Pop-up roller rinks, movies under the stars, and classical theater
The summer calendar is loaded with standout one-off spectacles that take full advantage of the amphitheater’s dramatic backdrop!
Next Wednesday, July 15, the entire sunken bowl transforms into a retro roller rink for Summer Skate in the Square.
DJ Saint James Joy will be spinning disco and funk anthems right by the water, and the park is even providing complimentary roller skate rentals on a first-come, first-served basis.
If you prefer to just sit back and relax, the popular Movies in the Square series is taking over the plaza on select Tuesday evenings through September 15. You can grab a seat on the steps and catch double screenings projected against the illuminated Manhattan skyline.
Theater lovers also have a massive date to circle: on August 14, the acclaimed company Molière in the Park is setting up in the center of the square for a special, one-night-only open-air preview of their production of Don Juan.
Dancing & live jazz under the smokestacks
You don’t need to spend a fortune at a Manhattan club to get an incredible night of live music this summer!
The sunken bowl is serving as an open-air dance floor and concert hall all season long.
On July 29, the plaza is hosting Típico P’al Pueblo, a vibrant community festival celebrating traditional Dominican Típico music with live bands and local food vendors.
If line dancing is more your speed, Buck Wild Line Dancing arrives on August 3, bringing professional instructors to teach synchronized hoedown steps on the waterfront. T
he recurring favorites are back as well, including Salsa by the Water on select Wednesday evenings in August and September.
For a moodier vibe, local creative incubator Pique-nique is hosting Unheard at Domino Park on July 23, August 20, and September 17, bringing improvisational live jazz sets to the waterfront as the sun goes down.
Free waterfront fitness & Sunday markets
New York fitness classes can easily drain your bank account, but the park’s Summer Fitness Series is offering elite wellness sessions for absolutely nothing.
New Yorkers can unroll their mats on the Flex Field every Saturday morning through September 5 for rotating studio workouts. You can also catch Sunrise Yoga on Tuesday mornings, Sunday Yoga presented by Farm Rio, and brand-new sessions dedicated to ancient Longevity Stick movements and Afro-Brazilian Capoeira.
When you finish your workout, test out The GrowNYC Greenmarket, which takes over the park every single Sunday with fresh regional produce and baked goods.
You can also grab a bite from new neighborhood additions like Stretch Pizza, Frita Batidos, or Birdee, proving just how much this formerly restricted industrial block has evolved into Williamsburg’s ultimate summer playground.
