Affording an apartment in NYC is difficult enough, but trying to make it look great? Impossible, right? Not if you know where to look. There are plenty of ways to decorate your apartment on a budget, especially in a city so big!
Craigslist
Your first stop should be Craigslist. The NYC Craigslist site is extremely active and often has people trying to get furniture and decor sold fast. Check daily for regular updates, you never know what awesome pieces you might find! You just have to be willig to pick up whatever the item is.
Flea Markets
There are plenty of flea markets, large and small, in all 5 boroughs. And you can find a lot of great decor. If you’re looking for mirrors, small accents and other cool pieces to add to your home, they are great to check out. Don’t be afraid to haggle!
Check Sidewalks
There are always people too lazy to try and sell items, or who need to get rid of them in a hurry. Often, people will just leave their awesome treasures outside of their apartments. That’s where you swoop in and get that cool rocking chair or new computer monitor. Things left out go FAST in the city, so if you see something you want, grab it.
Garage Sales
NYC is still home to classic garage sales. You’ll find them more often in the outerboroughs, but they are worth traveling to even if you are in Manhattan. You never know what you’ll find, but if you do a little digging you can often pick up something awesome.
Ikea
Look, every New Yorker likely owns at least ONE thing from Ikea (if not more). It’s convenient to get to in Brooklyn; they have their own ferry and shuttle! There’s no shame in a piece or two from the Swedish brand, as long as you dress it up nice enough to look like it wasn’t built by your own hands, who will know?
