2. Eiskalt: Eine Ausstellung von Hip-Hop-Schmuck

Ice Cold zeichnet die Geschichte des Hip-Hop von den 1980er Jahren bis heute nach und zeigt einige der ikonischsten Schmuckstücke, die von den größten kulturellen Einflüssen des Hip-Hop getragen wurden. Von Slick Ricks edelsteinbesetzter Krone über Notorious B.I.G.s legendäres goldenes Jesus-Stück“ bis hin zu Jay-Zs diamantenbesetztem Roc-A-Fella-Medaillon– die Ausstellung zeigt die Entwicklung des Schmucks und seine enge Beziehung zur Rap-Kultur. 3. Überlebensstück #5: Tragbarer Obstgarten

Diese Vision der Künstler Helen Mayer Harrison und Newton Harrison aus dem Jahr 1972 „erforscht die Notwendigkeit eines produktiven und nachhaltigen Lebensmittelsystems in einer imaginären Zukunft, in der natürliche Anbaumethoden veraltet sind und nicht als selbstverständlich angesehen werden können.“ Achtzehn lebende Zitrusbäume haben die Galerie im 8. Stock des Whitney übernommen, die ursprünglich als Reaktion auf die schwindenden Orangenbestände in Orange County, Kalifornien, geschaffen wurden. Jetzt stehen sie in New York im Mittelpunkt, in der Hoffnung, ein gesellschaftliches Bewusstsein für die gefährdeten Ökosysteme des Planeten zu schaffen.

5. Arbetare, The Met’s Rooftop Commission

Der kosovarische Künstler Petrit Halilaj hat eine weitläufige Installation aus verschiedenen Skulpturen geschaffen , die von Kritzeleien aus seiner Kindheit inspiriert sind, die er auf den Schulbänken seiner ehemaligen Schule im Kosovo sowie auf den Schulbänken anderer Schüler in albanischen und jugoslawischen Schulen gefunden hat. Vor dem Hintergrund der kulturellen und politischen Spannungen in der Region scheint das Thema des Aufwachsens in einem traumatischen Umfeld deutlich durch. 6. Konservierung im Gange

Der Restaurator Gary McGowan arbeitet ständig an der Konservierung von Materialien verschiedener Medien im Rahmen der Ausstellungsreihe „Preservation in Progress“. Bis zum Herbst wird er an mehreren großen Gemälden, darunter Art Deco City, an der „Reinigung, Reparatur und Ausbesserung von Verschleißstellen“ arbeiten: New York Postcards from the Leonard A. Lauder Collection (Eröffnung am 27. September 2024), die über 250 Postkarten sowie Kunstgewerbe, Mode, Fotografie, Zeichnungen und Architekturmodelle zeigt, und Above Ground: Kunst aus der Graffiti-Sammlung von Martin Wong (Eröffnung am 22. 9. Walton Ford: Vögel und Bestien des Studios

Diese Ausstellung auf Governors Island, die sich mit dem Klimawandel befasst, ist die Idee von Jenny Kendler, die in dem unterirdischen Magazin des historischen Fort Jay, einer sternförmigen Festung, die zwischen 1775 und 1776 auf Governors Island erbaut wurde, intime, filigrane Werke ausstellt. Die Besucher können aus nächster Nähe Perlenskulpturen betrachten, die in Austern gezüchtet wurden, Glocken, die von versteinerten Wal-Ohrknochen geläutet werden, ein kristallines Walauge, das aus Meersalz und menschlichen Tränen gegossen wurde, Glasfläschchen, die mit dem Öl längst verstorbener Wale gefüllt sind, und ein menschliches Nervensystem, das akribisch aus Tausenden winziger Perlen aufgereiht ist.

In dieser neuen Ausstellung mit etwa 45 Objekten wird gezeigt, wie sich „Frauenarbeit“ (historische Trends, die Frauen ermutigten, bestimmte Berufe zu ergreifen) einer Kategorisierung entzieht. Zu sehen sind Gegenstände wie medizinische Kits und Militäruniformen, die zeigen, wie wichtig die Arbeit der Frauen für das Rückgrat der amerikanischen Gesellschaft war.
