Originating in Baltimore back in 2020, Cloudy Donut amassed an impressive amount of social media fame during the pandemic. So us sweets aficionados were delighted when they opened their first NYC location in Brooklyn Heights at the end of 2022.
And with expansion and reverse gentrification still on their minds, as of today, February 1st, the donut shop has officially opened its second location in Nolita, making it the neighborhood’s first-ever Black-owned food and beverage business–so it’s only fitting they opened on the first day of Black History Month!
“We could’ve opened months ago, but I wanted to open on a historical day which is not only monumental for Black People, but all people,” said CEO and Founder, Derrick Faulcon.
Cloudy Donut is a 100% vegan, small-batched, gourmet donut shop that features 44 mouthwatering flavors that rotate on a weekly basis for humans and their pups!
The fluffier-than-ever donuts (hence the brand name) use ingredients like applesauce, coconut milk, and shortening in place of animal products, and they’re fried in liquid vegetable shortening.
Flavors include Grapefruit Mimosa (that even comes with a pipette of champagne), Blood Orange, Salted Caramel Whiskey, Cookie Butter, and Mango Chile Lime, among many, many others.
For the pups, they can feast on flavors including Lil Bow Wow (a cookies and cream donut with vanilla glaze and crumbled dog treats) and Snoop Doggy Donut (a peanut butter glazed donut topped with cheddar dog treats).
Since opening they also began offering vegan cookies, pound cake, and cinnamon rolls.
Beyond selling mouthwatering donuts, owners Derrick and Justin Faulcon aim to “reverse gentrify,” showing that Black-owned businesses can open and thrive in affluent and diverse communities.
“The goal is to continue to put black and brown faces in white spaces through the medium of phenomenal products which in turn creates community and pushes the entire World forward, or as we say changing the World one donut at a time,” said Derrick Faulcon.
Cloudy Donut opens in Nolita on Thursday, February 1st at 209 Mott Street.
