CJ Hendry’s artwork is nothing if not vibrant. Her felt “Flower Market” showcase and immersive balloon playground “Keff Joons“ are both brimming with color and whimsy, but her latest undertaking is quite the opposite.
The artist teamed up with Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream for something a li’l different, but equally as exciting. Ready for the scoop?
Take a bite out of CJ Hendry’s “Opaque” at this Soho pop-up
Though we typically think of an ice cream sundae as something that’s colorful, Jeni’s and CJ will go the opposite route with jet black ice cream made with black cocoa, espresso fudge, and balsamic cherry. Color or not, the concoction sounds delicious, if you ask us.
“We wanted to create an experience that pushes sensory boundaries,” the artist said in a statement. “Removing color makes you feel everything else more deeply — the texture, the taste, the emotion. It’s quiet, it’s bold, it’s unlike any other ice cream shop you’ve ever stepped inside.”
From August 15th to 17th in Soho, an “Opaque” monochromatic pop-up will celebrate the bold flavor and intention behind the creation. Per Hendry’s team, the pop-up is “a sensory experience that interrogates and immerses viewers beyond the visual, re-contextualizing the endless appeal of ice cream.” While there, curious visitors will be able to purchase scoops and pints of the new flavor, and cool merch.
If you’re looking to add something bold to your apartment, Hendry will unveil new works made exclusively for the collaboration that will be on sale as well. The ice cream is available online and in scoop shops beginning August 14th.
Beth Stallings, director of innovation at Jeni’s, said, “It was about creating something that is layers deep, that feels like an excavation of flavor. With OPAQUE, guests will have to rely on their senses, allowing the flavor to unfold with each bite.”
We’re not sure about you, but when it comes to one of our favorite artists and favorite desserts, we’re totally hooked. If you’re still craving something sweet after your visit, check out some of the best ice cream shops in NYC.
