New Yorkers were heartbroken when City Bakery announced it was closing after 30 long and delicious years. Luckily, we didn’t have to say goodbye for too long.
Founder Maury Rubin first returned with a pop-up hot chocolate tour all over NYC, lovingly called “Me and My Hot Chocolate Tour,” where he set up shop at different businesses around the city like bakeries and ice cream shops. And now he once again has a brick-and-mortar shop dedicated to all things chocolate, called the “Wonderbon Chocolate Co.”
It sounds like somewhere even Willy Wonka himself would be proud of! The website promises a “one-of-a-kind hot chocolate menu, hot chocolate made from pure melted chocolate infused with flavors like caramel, espresso, vanilla and ginger, peanuts and almonds, bananas, pears and peppers, too.”
They also have plenty of regular handmade chocolates like truffles, chocolate Tartines, chocolate custards and puddings, with traditional and vegan options. The chocolate-lovers paradise is a partnership between Rubin and “lifelong chocolate lover” Alex Atzberger.

And there will be boozy versions! During “Hot Chocolate Happy Hour” there will be a mezcal-spiked hot chocolate with a salted rim, rum hot chocolate with coconut whipped cream, an imperial stout hot chocolate, and plenty more.
They are also planning to bring high-quality hot chocolate to cities other than New York, with “hot chocolate made from actual melted chocolate bars ready to drink in a package.” So friends and family can get the ‘City Bakery’ hot chocolate experience wherever they are…see shipping options on their website here.
As of now, it will run through April.
