Whether you’re hoping to escape the crowds of the more popular markets or you’re in search of a unique gift that you can’t find elsewhere, we’re spilling the secret on NYC’s most under-the-radar Christmas market. Tucked away on 48th Street in Midtown East lies the Church of Sweden. But this isn’t just a historic NYC church, no this building is home to a hidden Julmarknad/Christmas market.
Upon entering the 103-year-old church, you’ll take a quick right into the library. I was immediately struck by the church’s inviting and warm atmosphere, as the smell of cardamom and saffron buns floated to me.
All visitors are welcome to peruse and purchase a wide array of artisan products and Swedish crafts on display. Find everything from the Dala horse (a traditional Swedish symbol of strength and courage) to mugs and mittens to stay cozy this winter.
However, my favorite part of the market was the seemingly endless supply of Swedish candy to buy. If you’ve got a sweet tooth, beware, because you’ll want to by everything you lay your eyes on.
Beyond the shelves upon shelves of Swedish candy and chocolates, be sure to head all the way to the back to the cafe area. Here, the staff is serving up fresh national delicacies, from Swedish meatballs (which were delicious, and dare I say rival IKEA‘s) to fluffy pastries and cakes.
Feel free to order whatever captures your attention and cozy into one of the many seating options available. P.S. they even have outlets if you cared to grab a sweet bun and coffee to get some work done.
Once you’ve had your fill of Swedish treats, head downstairs for even more shopping! When I was last there I found the cutest little winter gnomes that would look perfect on any coffee or side table. I also came across cookie cutters, decorative napkins for hosting and so much more you’ll just have to check it out yourself.
The Julmarknad/Christmas Market at the Church of Sweden is open Wednesdays through Sundays from 12pm – 6pm. Find more on the church’s website.
