Getting across the Bronx is about to get a whole lot smoother. 😮💨
NYC has officially broken ground on a massive project to overhaul the 161st Street corridor, aiming to slash commute times and make the streets around Yankee Stadium significantly safer for pedestrians.
If you’ve ever been caught in game-day gridlock or watched your bus crawl through traffic on 161st Street, this project is for you.
By introducing dedicated bus lanes and transforming a major underpass, the city is looking to “unstick” one of the borough’s busiest transit hubs just in time for the 2026 baseball season.
What is the project?
The redesign focuses on the 161st Street crosstown corridor, a vital artery that serves roughly 25,000 daily riders on the Bx6 and Bx6 Select Bus Service (SBS) lines.
The project is designed to eliminate the “bottleneck” effect that occurs when buses are trapped behind stadium-bound traffic.
Key upgrades coming to the corridor include:
- Dedicated bus lanes: New westbound bus-only lanes will be added to keep transit moving independently of car traffic.
- Underpass conversion: In a major move, the 161st Street underpass will be converted to bus-only in the westbound direction, allowing buses to bypass surface-level congestion entirely.
- Safety enhancements: New pedestrian refuges and curb extensions are being installed to make crossing the street safer for the millions of fans and locals who traverse the area.
- Commuter amenities: The city is adding new bus shelters, benches, and “leaning bars” to make waiting for the bus a more comfortable experience.
- Enhanced accessibility: New infrastructure will make boarding easier and more accessible for all riders.
Why it matters
For Bronx residents, the Bx6 is a lifeline, but it is frequently one of the slower routes due to the high volume of traffic near the Bronx County Courthouse and Yankee Stadium.
By giving buses their own dedicated path—especially through the underpass—transit officials expect a significant jump in travel speeds. Similar projects in the Bronx have seen bus speeds increase by as much as 43%.

Beyond speed, this is a major “Vision Zero” win.
With over three million people visiting Yankee Stadium every year, the area is a high-traffic zone for pedestrians. The new safety features are designed to reduce accidents and create a more walkable environment in the heart of the South Bronx.
When will it be finished?
Work is officially underway as of this week!
The city is aiming to complete the major components of the project throughout 2026.
While construction is active, the DOT plans to work around the Yankee Stadium schedule to minimize disruptions during home games.
This groundbreaking is the latest in a series of major transit wins for the city, following recent news of the Second Avenue Subway expansion and the massive order of 2,000+ new subway cars.
