New York City is gearing up for an unforgettable summer. As the city welcomes the world for the FIFA World Cup, Lower Manhattan is throwing a massive waterfront celebration.
The Battery Conservancy and Battery Park City Authority are officially launching Big Screen at The Battery. This brand-new, free outdoor series brings sports, film, music, and community right to the edge of New York Harbor.
A summer of sports and cinema
From July 4 through July 19, The Battery’s waterfront lawn will transform into the ultimate summer gathering spot. Fans can catch live broadcasts of the FIFA World Cup quarterfinals, semifinals, and final matches.
It is the perfect excuse to sit on the grass and cheer alongside your fellow New Yorkers. Plus, you get the Statue of Liberty as your backdrop.
Over the course of the two-week series, visitors can also expect:
- Outdoor movie nights under the stars
- Live performances and family activities
- Conversations exploring local history and culture
- Food and beverage vendors overlooking the water
Historic screenings and celebrations
If sports are not your thing, the series has plenty of culture on deck. A major highlight hits on July 8, featuring a special outdoor screening of On the Town. This beloved New York musical will celebrate America’s 250th anniversary festivities in partnership with the Downtown Alliance and PAC NYC.
History buffs should mark their calendars for July 9. The park will host the world premiere of By George. This new documentary marks exactly 250 years since the toppling of King George III’s statue at nearby Bowling Green. A conversation with the filmmakers and historians will immediately follow the screening.
What to know before you go
All Big Screen at The Battery events are completely free and open to the public. Visitors are highly encouraged to bring blankets and enjoy the relaxed, picnic-style setting.
While admission costs nothing, registration is recommended for select screenings and matches to secure your spot.
