Euromonitor International released its Top 100 City Destinations Index 2023 and NYC ranked eighth on overall city attractiveness.
Even though NYC will always be number one in our hearts regardless of data, the study based its ranking on 55 different metrics across six key pillars: (1) economic and business performance, (2) tourism performance, (3) tourism infrastructure, (4) tourism policy and attractiveness, (5) health and safety, and (6) sustainability.
To answer the question you’ve all been wondering about who holds first place for the best city destination in 2023, it’s none other than Paris, France. The City of Lights has maintained the top spot after being crowned number one in last year’s report as well.
“Paris has retained the title of the world’s leading city following exceptional performance across the Tourism Policy and Attractiveness, Tourism Infrastructure and Tourism Performance pillars,” said Nadejda Popova, Senior Manager (Loyalty) at Euromonitor International.
NYC was the only spot in the United States of America that made it into the top 10. In fact, Europe dominated the top 10 with seven cities taking a spot. The ranking is as follows:
1. Paris, France
2. Dubai, United Arab Emirates
3. Madrid, Spain
4. Tokyo, Japan
5. Amsterdam, the Netherlands
6. Berlin, Germany
7. Rome, Italy
8. New York, United States of America
9. Barcelona, Spain
10. London, United Kingdom
According to the study, international travel grew 38% in terms of the number of trips taken in 2023. Moreover, spending on global tourism is projected hit $1.7 trillion by the end of the year. This growth however is leading to overtourism in certain cities. “Some destinations are imposing restrictions, steep taxation or reduction of hotel capacity to help limit the influx of tourists and preserve cultural heritage, while others embrace dispersion strategies that promote alternative or off-the-beaten-path destinations,” explained Popova.
In 2024, the rising cost of living and fluctuating inflation are expected to pose a challenge for industry growth. Experts predict heavy intraregional travel due to their “value for money travel propositions.” In that case, you’ll definitely want to check out these 10 Whimsical Winter Getaways From NYC To Visit In The New Year.
