Banksy is back in New York City and he’s making a statement.
After a five year absence from the city, Banksy is back. On his Instragram account yesterday, the anonymous British graffiti artist posted announcements of his most recent work. The first piece is a known motif of his, a rat. In this case it’s running on the inner circumference of a clock above an entry way to a former bank building on 14th street. Unfortunately the building is set for demolition in coming months.
More importantly however is his collaboration piece with graffiti artist Borf on the Bowery Wall. The 70 ft. long mural was created in response to the imprisonment of Zehra Dogan who was reportedly imprisoned last year for the creation of the painting depicted below. On his instagram page, Banksy captioned his photo of the mural,
“Sentenced to nearly three years in jail for painting a single picture. #FREEzehradogan.”
The mural has been timed to coincide with the one year anniversary of her imprisonment.
