Our favorite fake German heiress Anna Delvey, Dancing With The Stars‘ newest contestant, certainly keeps the surprises coming.
Delvey, whose real name is Anna Sorokin, swindled wealthy New Yorkers out of hundreds of thousands of dollars in 2019 for the fabricated Anna Delvey Foundation, her private club and art foundation. An in-depth New York Magazine article exposed the story, and a fictionalized Netflix series, Inventing Anna, followed the dramatic saga.
Now, after being convicted, serving a prison sentence, remaining on house arrest, plotting a TV series Dining With Anna from her East Village apartment (among other creative projects), Anna is dipping her toe into the dancing world.
The announcement came on Good Morning America on September 4th, and needless to say, fans of DWTS were not necessarily expecting this addition to the show’s 33rd season, which airs on September 17th.
“I kind of got talked into doing this. I got the permission from ICE [U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement] and then it was kind of too late to back out,” she told The Hollywood Reporter after the news broke.
Now, Delvey is looking forward to getting in a workout in as she partners with Ezra Sosa. And yes, her ankle monitor will remain on throughout the competition, and she does face the possibility of deportation.
According to the Associated Press, she could travel within 70 miles of her home base and anywhere in the five boroughs of New York City under previous house arrest conditions.
It’ll definitely make for an interesting season, and we’re certainly adding this to our list of things to do this September — any New Yorker would agree. Let’s see if she can swindle the judges into a top spot. Would someone pass the popcorn? Please and thanks.
