🌷 150,000 Free Tulips: A “Tulip Day” Debut
The biggest floral news this year is the inaugural Tulip Day Washington, a vibrant tradition that has blossomed in cities across the globe since its debut in Amsterdam in 2012.
Originally established by Dutch tulip growers to celebrate the start of the season, the event has successfully expanded to major hubs like San Francisco and Antwerp—even spending several years right here in NYC at Union Square!
Now, the festival is headed south to the nation’s capital, just like anyone who embarks on this floraly escape.
On Sunday, March 15th, 2026, the National Mall (near the Smithsonian Metro station) will transform into a massive pop-up garden featuring 150,000 tulips!
In a tradition inspired by the Netherlands, visitors are invited to walk through the display and pick 10 tulips for free to create their own bouquet.
Note: Due to massive popularity, tickets for the picking garden were released in early March and sold out quickly. However, even without a picking ticket, the display is a public spectacle worth seeing for the vibrant colors against the backdrop of the U.S. Capitol.
🌸 2026 Cherry Blossom Peak Bloom Forecast

And if you miss Tulip Day, not to worry!
Your floral fascination still awaits, as you’ll be arriving just in time for the main event.
The National Park Service (NPS) has officially predicted that the 2026 peak bloom for the cherry blossoms will occur between March 29th and April 1st.
During this window, 70% of the Yoshino cherry trees surrounding the Tidal Basin will be in full bloom, creating a “snow-white” canopy of blossoms.
The National Cherry Blossom Festival itself runs from March 20 to April 12, featuring the Blossom Kite Festival (March 28) and the grand parade (April 11).
💐 Beyond the Tidal Basin: The Floral Library

For a more curated experience, head to the Floral Library (also known as the Tulip Library) located near the Jefferson Memorial.
Established in 1969 as part of Lady Bird Johnson’s beautification project, this garden features 93 flower beds filled with unique tulip varieties from Holland.
These typically bloom alongside or slightly after the cherry blossoms, providing a second wave of color for your floral escape.
So, pack your favorite walking shoes, charge your camera, and get ready to trade the subway grates for garden gates.
Whether you’re bringing back a hand-picked bouquet or just a phone full of floral photos, D.C. is ready to show you its best side.
Pinkies up—it’s blossom time! 🌸🌷
