We already knew New York City was going all out for spooky season, but it turns out the city had a few more tricks up its sleeve. If you haven’t yet finalized your NYC Halloween plans, you’re in luck.
The Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) just announced a massive expansion to their 2026 Trick-or-Streets program, bumping the number of car-free events from 160 up to a whopping 180+.
Now in its fifth year, this initiative transforms the city’s Open Streets, plazas, and busy corridors into pedestrian-friendly Halloween block parties. Instead of dodging delivery trucks and honking cars, New Yorkers can spend the holiday wandering through safe, car-free neighborhoods filled with festivities.
And because of record-breaking community interest, the DOT has added even more locations to the lineup just in time for Halloween weekend, falling on Saturday, October 31.
Here’s what to know about NYC’s expanded Trick-or-Streets 2026 celebration, including what to expect and where to find events.

🎃 What to expect at the expanded Trick-or-Streets
For the remainder of October, local organizations, schools, and cultural groups are turning their neighborhood streets into massive, family-friendly Halloween hubs.
Whether you’re looking for activities for kids in NYC or just want to enjoy the crisp fall air without the traffic, the expanded routes offer a ton of free programming, including:
- Free trick-or-treating: The NYC DOT and local partners are distributing a staggering 75,000 pieces of candy across participating locations
- Live entertainment: Expect to see interactive theater, puppetry, and live music
- Unique cultural experiences: Programming goes way beyond the standard candy run, featuring traditional drumming, opera, sugar painting, and skateboarding
- Fall photo ops: Get your seasonal pictures in at neighborhood pumpkin patches and festive photo booths
- Hands-on activities: Dive into science demonstrations, arts and crafts, and interactive games
- Games and family-friendly fun: Participating streets and plazas will host activities for New Yorkers of different ages and abilities

👻 More Halloween events outside NYC public schools
To bring the fun directly to local families, the city has expanded its partnership with Street Lab and The Horticultural Society of New York. They’re hosting nine special Signature School events across Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and the Bronx.
These activations turn the streets right outside of local schools into vibrant, seasonal playgrounds featuring creative play and pumpkin patches. Participating schools include:
- PS 59 The Community School of Technology in the Bronx
- PS 28 Mount Hope Centennial School in the Bronx
- PS 159 Luis Munoz Marin in the Bronx
- PS 18 Edward Bush in Brooklyn
- PS 137 in Brooklyn
- Dock Street School for STEAM Studies in Brooklyn
- Community Health Academy of the Heights in Manhattan
- PS 102 Jacques Cartier in Manhattan
- PS 95Q The Eastwood School in Queens
