For New Yorkers, a road trip usually means one thing: getting out of the city as quickly as possible. But somewhere along the highways leading out of our favorite city, there’s a pit stop that’s you’ve definitely heard some chatter about — and many New Yorkers may not even realize it’s within driving distance.
Buc-ee’s, the Texas-born travel center known for its enormous gas stations, rows of pumps, barbecue, snacks, clean restrooms, and famously oversized beaver mascot, has become an attraction in its own right. And one of its locations sits along a popular route for New Yorkers heading south, making it an easy stop for a longer road trip.

📍 Where is the closest Buc-ee’s to NYC?
The closest Buc-ee’s to New York City is in Mount Crawford, Virginia, just off I-81 at Exit 240 in the Shenandoah Valley. From NYC, the drive is roughly 300 miles and about 5 hours, depending on traffic.
The easiest route is to take I-78 west through New Jersey and Pennsylvania, then connect to I-81 south toward Harrisonburg, Virginia. Once you’re on I-81, simply take Exit 240 for Friedens Church Road, where the massive Buc-ee’s is just a short drive from the highway.
The Buc-ee’s concept is famously different from the typical highway rest stop. Rather than simply pulling over for gas and a bathroom break, visitors can spend considerably more time wandering through the store and it’s many offerings.
🚗 A convenient stop along I-81
Whether you’re continuing toward Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina, or another destination farther south, it’s an easy place to break up the drive, grab some road-trip snacks, fuel up, and experience the famously massive Texas-born travel center.
And with 120 fueling positions and 74,000 square feet under one roof, it’s certainly not your average highway gas station — so you may want to leave a little extra time for this very large beaver-shaped detour.
