Clear your calendar and warm up your polka moves, because one of New York’s most legendary mountains is about to smell like bratwurst and beer for a weekend this September.
Whiteface Mountain Oktoberfest returns to the Adirondacks this fall, transforming the site of the 1980 Winter Olympics alpine events into a full Bavarian-style celebration complete with oompah bands, gondola rides, and enough German beer to make Munich jealous.
As one of only two U.S. locations to ever host Winter Olympic alpine skiing on the East Coast, Whiteface already has bragging rights most mountains don’t.
SKI Magazine backed that reputation up further, naming it one of the 5 Must-Visit Oktoberfests in North America.
Even better? Getting in doesn’t require an Olympic-level effort.
Here’s everything you need to know before heading up the mountain.
🍺 What to expect at Whiteface Mountain Oktoberfest
For two full days on September 26 and 27, 2026, the base of Whiteface transforms into a Bavarian-style festival grounds, gondola cars included.
This isn’t a one-band, one-tent affair either, Whiteface builds out multiple entertainment zones at once, so the party never really stops moving.
Expect a full sensory takeover featuring:
- Live Oompah Bands & Alpine Dancers: Headliner die Schlauberger, billed as America’s top German band, takes the Main Entertainment Tent, while The Adlers and Schachtelgebirger Musikanten keep the Cloudspin Bar & Grill lively, alongside the Alpenland Taenzer dance troupe and a trio of Alphorn players performing from the top of Little Whiteface
- A Full Bavarian Menu: Bratwurst, kraut hund, loaded baked potatoes, wood-fired Flammkuchen (German-style pizza), smoked meat platters, and Belgian waffles, all washed down with Goose Island Oktoberfest and Common Roots Fritz on draft
- Scenic Gondola Rides: The Cloudsplitter Gondola runs throughout the festival, giving riders a front-row seat to early fall foliage across the Adirondacks
- Family-Friendly Activities: Pumpkin painting, bounce houses, craft vendors, and a set from the award-winning Give & Take Jugglers round out the weekend for younger festival-goers
🗓️ Whiteface Oktoberfest 2026 schedule & highlights
The festival runs across two days, with hours shifting slightly between Saturday and Sunday:
- Saturday, September 26: Festival grounds and gondola open at 10:30a m, with entertainment starting at 11 am and the party running until 6 pm
- Sunday, September 27: Same 10:30 am opening and 11 am entertainment start, wrapping slightly earlier at 5 pm
Whiteface recommends taking the scenic gondola ride earlier in the day rather than the afternoon, since lines tend to stretch longer once the crowds build.
No food or drink tickets are needed this year, credit cards are accepted at every outdoor stand, with cash also accepted indoors.

🍁 More fall programming happening at Whiteface
Oktoberfest is really just the opening act for Whiteface’s fall calendar.
The following weekend, the mountain hosts the WHOOP UCI Mountain Bike World Series from October 2-4, bringing elite international mountain bikers to the same slopes that host World Cup ski races in winter. If beer tents and bike races both sound appealing, it’s worth timing a trip to catch the tail end of one and the start of the other.
Beyond that, the wider region keeps the fall momentum going with the Festival of Colors in nearby Wilmington and, about 40 minutes away in Tupper Lake, a spinoff Oktoberfest celebration locals have nicknamed OKTUPPERfest, typically held on Columbus Day weekend for anyone who wants a second round.
🏔️ Why Whiteface is worth the trip beyond Oktoberfest
Even without the beer tent, Whiteface earns its reputation.
It boasts the greatest vertical drop east of the Rockies at 3,430 feet, and as New York’s fifth-highest peak, it’s the same mountain that hosted every alpine ski event at the 1980 Winter Olympics, including the legendary Skyward downhill course, which skiers can still ride today.
The timing lines up almost perfectly with peak foliage too.
The surrounding Adirondacks region was just named the #1 Fall Foliage Destination in the U.S. for 2026, with color typically peaking in the last two weeks of September, right around Oktoberfest weekend itself.
The Cloudsplitter Gondola stays open daily through October 12 for exactly this reason, ferrying visitors up to Little Whiteface’s summit at 3,676 feet, where clear days offer views into both Vermont and Canada.
For anyone who wants to earn the view instead of riding to it, daily nature hikes depart from the gondola’s summit terminal at 10:30am, with an extra 1:30pm hike on select Saturdays.

🍂 Exploring the town beyond the mountain
Whiteface sits just outside Wilmington, a small Adirondack town that makes an easy home base for the weekend, with Lake Placid itself only about 15 minutes further down the road. A few ways to round out the trip:
- Drive the Whiteface Veterans’ Memorial Highway, an 8-mile scenic road climbing to over 4,800 feet with multiple lookout points along the way, no hiking boots required
- Stop by High Falls Gorge, a dramatic waterfall and gorge walk just outside Wilmington that’s especially photogenic once the leaves turn
- Visit Rulfs Orchard for apple and pumpkin picking, a classic fall pairing with the Oktoberfest trip
- Wander downtown Lake Placid, home to the 1980 Olympic Center, Mirror Lake, and a walkable strip of shops and restaurants for anyone extending the weekend
