Eines der lebhaftesten Viertel Brooklyns liegt entlang der Avenues Flatbush, Church und Nostrand und wird als „Little Caribbean“ bezeichnet. Es beherbergt die größte karibisch-amerikanisch-lateinamerikanische Gemeinschaft außerhalb der Westindischen Inseln.
Das Viertel erhielt seinen offiziellen Namen im Jahr 2017 dank Shelley Worrell von caribBEING, einer kulturellen Organisation, die sich für die Stärkung der Gemeinschaft einsetzt und die karibische Diaspora in New York City ehrt und die Bewegung anführt.

1. Allan’s Caribbean Bakery
Diese Bäckerei, die sich in dritter Generation befindet, versorgt Brooklyn seit über einem halben Jahrhundert mit Lebensmitteln. Sie wurde von dem Ehepaar Allan und Gloria gegründet, nachdem ihr aus einem Fahrzeug umgebauter Bäckerladen, in dem sie Brot und Brötchen verkauften, zu klein geworden war. In der Bäckerei werden noch immer Methoden und Techniken der alten Schule angewandt, um das Erbe von Allan fortzuführen. Auf der umfangreichen Speisekarte finden Besucher alles, vom schweren Kokosnuss-Süßbrot bis zum karibischen Biskuitkuchen.

2. Lips Cafe
Das Lips Cafe zelebriert Kreativität, Kaffee und karibische Kultur. Das Lips Cafe ist beliebt für seine Open-Mic-Veranstaltungen, Modenschauen und besonderen Aktionen und ist „ein Ort in der Gemeinde, an dem sich die Menschen auf jede erdenkliche Weise weiterentwickeln können“, so Inhaber Jamane Weekes.

3. Hibiskus-Bräu
Hibiscus Brew trotzte allen Widrigkeiten, als es im Sommer 2020 eröffnete. Doch auch in schwierigen Zeiten war Hibiscus Brew für die Gemeinschaft da, und fast drei Jahre später ist es immer noch ein Favorit im Viertel für Smoothies, Kaffee und mehr.

4. Errol’s Caribbean Bakery
Von Hartteigbroten, Brötchen und Obstkuchen bis hin zu Curryziege, Ochsenschwanz, Jerk-Huhn und Hühnerfußsuppe – bei Errol’s gibt es die besten Geschmacksrichtungen der Karibik aus einer Hand. Die Bäckerei ist seit mehr als 20 Jahren in der Nachbarschaft ansässig.
