To synchronize astronomical time with atomic time, a leap second is going to be added to the clock June 30th. You might think a second doesn’t make much difference, but the expression “I’ll be there in a New York minute” exists for a reason. Every New Yorker can find something to do with an extra second. Here are a few ideas:
1. Make your subway train
You know when you make it through the turnstile only to watch the doors close and the train take off? With your extra second, you will be on that train!
2. Get that taxi
Nab it before that stuffy guy in the business suit ten feet down from you gets it, so you’re not stuck waiting for another five minutes to see an empty one.
3. Give some change to a street performer
You can take more seconds to stay and watch if you have time.
4. Send the ball back to the pick-up game
Save the players the trouble of having to run all the way across the road to get it.
5. Clean up
You might think this takes longer than a second, but if you pick up just one piece of trash right in your walking path and toss it in a garbage can/recycling bin also right in your walking path, you can do it!
6. Tip your barista
Spread the love.
7. Smile
And be thankful you live in the greatest city on earth!
