Get ready to roll down the windows and grab the snacks, New Yorkers!
There’s nothing quite like the nostalgia of a drive-in movie theater.
The crackling audio, the glow of the silver screen against the night sky, and the endless stream of snacks make for the perfect summer night out.
If you’ve been missing that retro magic, we have some fantastic news for your 2026 summer bucket list:
After a three-year hiatus, the historic Hyde Park Drive-In is officially making a comeback!

A Hudson Valley Staple Reborn
Located just a couple of hours north of NYC, the Hyde Park Drive-In has been a staple of Upstate New York culture since it first turned the projector on in 1950.
Originally opened by Sidney and Ida Cohen, the theater operated for a staggering 72 years.
It sits on a nine-acre plot of land that is actually part of former President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s historic estate, making it a property of the National Park Service.
Sadly, in May 2023, the Cohen family had to close the theater’s doors. But you can’t keep a good drive-in down for long!
Dutchess County Executive Sue Serino recently took to Facebook to share the news that every movie buff has been waiting for: a new operator has stepped in to revive the beloved theater for the upcoming 2026 season.
“I am absolutely thrilled that a new operator is stepping in to bring the big screen back to life,” Serino shared online. “It’s more than just a movie theater; it’s a piece of our local history and a summer tradition that we’ve all truly missed.”
What We Know About the Reopening
The National Park Service spent the last year searching for the perfect operator to lease and maintain the historic property. While the identity of the new movie maestro is still being kept tightly under wraps by the NPS, here is what we know about the space:
- Massive Capacity: The sprawling nine-acre property has enough parking space for up to 670 cars.
- Classic Amenities: The lease includes the original single-story concession stand, bathrooms, the iconic marquee sign, the ticket booth, and, of course, the giant projection screen.
- The Schedule: The NPS was seeking an operator to run the spot from Memorial Day through Labor Day, meaning it will be the ultimate summer weekend destination.

A Community Ready for a Double Feature
The news of the Hyde Park Drive-In’s return has sparked a wave of joy across the Hudson Valley and beyond.
From recalling childhood screenings of Jurassic Park, The Muppets Take Manhattan, and 101 Dalmatians to life-changing moments like marriage proposals—and even one local who went into labor there—the theater is deeply woven into the fabric of the community.
While a specific opening date hasn’t been locked in just yet, the 2026 Upstate drive-in season generally kicks off in early April.
If you can’t wait that long, the Cohen family’s other location, the historic Overlook Drive-In in Poughkeepsie, remains open for your double-feature needs.
Keep your eyes peeled on that Albany Post Road marquee—the big screen is about to light up once again!
