We New Yorkers spend too much time complaining, and not enough time appreciating what we have. Count your blessings today. Here are 10 to start:
1. You can eat pretty much any kind of food you want
Want Lebanese food? You can have it. Want Afghan food? You can have it. Someone somewhere in this city makes the kind of food you are craving/want to try, no matter what it is. And that’s incredible.
2. There is no shortage of people to hang out with
Sick of your old friends? You’ve got 8 million potential new ones to choose from. And there’s no doubt you can find someone who has something in common with you.
3. You can do outrageously weird things and people will just smile and wave
Feel like going to work in a pirate costume or riding a unicycle instead of the bus? Nobody will bat an eye. Okay, they might, but they’ll take you as part of a normal day in the city. And you’ll probably make them smile.
4. You never have to walk more than a block to get a coffee
And you can get it from a food truck for about a dollar.
5. You never have to be bored
There is an endless supply of things to do in the city. And if you don’t know where to start making plans, Fever has got you covered.
6. You can get high all the time
By going to rooftop parties, that is. There’s an endless supply of them.
7. Public transportation
It’s cheaper than gas, car insurance and car maintenance. And when you go out for a night on the town, you always have a way to get home safe.
8. Free wifi on the subway
And soon, free wifi everywhere.
9. Whatever kind of entertainment you like, it’s here
You don’t have to sit in your room on the Internet watching stand-up comedy or burlesque or weird foreign/indie films. You can go to live shows and screenings with other people who are just as into those same things.
10. You’re happy
And you know how I know that? It’s hard to live in New York. Bills would be much easier to pay if you picked up and went somewhere else. So everyone who lives here must have something that makes them happy—a good job, your closest friends or family, or just the craziness of this beautiful city. There is something you love that is keeping you here, that you get to experience every single day.
