Have a sleepover at this haven of 90s movie nostalgia.
Bend, Oregan is home to the last remaining Blockbuster in the whole world and thanks to faithful video customers it’s managed to survive the total domination of streaming giants. While video rental chains have become mere fossils of the 90s, the novelty this old store has kept going—even through a pandemic. It seems that during a time of extreme uncertainty, we’re all desperately seeking refuge in the comforts of the past. So the manager of the store, Sandi Harding, has turned the aisles of videos into just that: A nostalgia-filled escape that you can rent on Airbnb.
The lucky residents of Deschutes County will be able to book a sleepover experience in the store for just one night (for $4 a night), with three nights available in total. Anyone who manages to book night will be treated to all the overlooked joys of simpler times. Yes, that means you can choose from the store’s full catalog of releases, pop a video into an old Sony machine and let the movie magic transport you to a bygone era.
Guests will have the whole store to themselves and be able to enjoy a movie (or videogame) marathon in a fully-functioning living room complete with a pull-out couch, bean bags and pillows to pass out on. There’ll also Pepsi to sip on and NERDS, Raisinets and popcorn to munch on during those nail-biting scenes. Of course, there’ll be pizza too.
If you suddenly feel the urge to pack up and move your life and become a resident of Deschutes County but don’t know how to explain it to your landlord, then Harding has got you covered. Out-of-towners will still get a taste of the experience by dialing into a Callgorithm on 541-385-9111 where knowledgable staff will be giving out personalized movie recommendations.
When guests check out, customers will also be allowed to browse the store during store hours and check out the living room space for a limited time. To ensure the safety of all guests and customers, the whole store will be cleaned between visits in accordance with Airbnb’s Enhanced Cleaning Protocol (which is informed by CDC recommendations). Face-coverings and sanitizer will available too.
If you know anyone who lives in the county and you want to experience this vicariously through them, then let them know that August 17 at 1 pm PT, is when the property is open for reservations on Airbnb. The only days available will be September 18, 19 and 20, are for no more than four people at a time.
If you wish to get your hands on some merch you can do so through the website.
