A massive architectural marvel built in record time
The gorgeous building you see today is actually the fourth structure to stand on this exact spot. The very first “preacher’s stand” was built back in 1870. After a few iterations—including a frame covered in tree boughs that offered zero protection from the rain—the community realized they needed something much bigger.
In 1891, plans were made to build a space that could seat 10,000 people. Ground was broken on December 2, 1893, and the construction speed was nothing short of miraculous. By March 28, 1894, just 36 workmen had completed the ironwork.
The scale of the building is mind-blowing. It covers 36,225 square feet and was built using 550,000 pounds of steel and iron. To keep the massive space cool, it features a whopping 262 doors and windows, 232 of which can be opened to let in the ocean breeze.
From 10,000 seats to presidential visitors
Originally, the Great Auditorium achieved a seating capacity of 9,600 by packing the space with folding chairs and benches. Today, you can comfortably sit in one of its 7,000 padded theater-style seats on the main floor.
Unsurprisingly, a venue this grand has hosted some major historical figures. President Ulysses S. Grant, who had a summer home just 5 miles away in Long Branch, was a frequent visitor. Since no vehicles were allowed on the grounds on Sundays, Grant famously insisted on walking in like any other law-abiding citizen rather than breaking the rules to take his carriage!
The Auditorium’s platform has also hosted seven other U.S. Presidents, including Garfield, McKinley, Teddy Roosevelt, Taft, Wilson, Eisenhower, and Nixon. Thanks to the sweeping acoustics, legendary preachers and evangelists like Billy Graham and Norman Vincent Peale have also drawn massive standing-room crowds here.

- Sunday Worship Services: Held in person at 10:30 AM from June 14 to September 13, 2026. (If you can’t make the drive, they also stream live at oceangrove.org/watch, and interpretation for the deaf is provided in person).
- The Camp Meeting: A tradition since 1870, this 7-day event offers an intensified period of religious fellowship, instruction, and music.
- Annual Choir Festival: Held on a Saturday evening in early July, this massive musical event features hundreds of singers and instrumentalists performing under a variety of conductors.
