On Monday, April 28th, Governor Kathy Hochul announced that an agreement had been reached and New York State had finally approved its Fiscal Year 2026 New York State Budget. With that came the news that Hochul could make good on her promise of giving millions of New Yorkers inflation rebate checks to ease the financial burden inflation is placing on residents–but when do you get your inflation stimulus check?

Under the proposal, more than 8 million New Yorkers will receive $2 billion worth of direct cash assistance via these new stimulus checks. New Yorkers earning less than $150,000 will receive a one-time stimulus payment of $200, while married couples filing jointly with a combined income of less than $300,000 will receive a $400 stimulus payment.
The money will be funded by surplus revenue generated by the sales tax, which are driven by generally rising prices. Governor Hochul also made it clear that they they didn’t have to resort to creating new New York taxes in order to make the stimulus checks possible. She stated:
The cost of living is still too damn high, so I promised to put more money in your pockets – and we got it done.
Though the payment amounts are lower than originally announced–Hochul originally mentioned $3 billion-worth of stimulus checks with one-time payments of up to $500–to combat this there will now be no increases in state income or business taxes during the next fiscal year.
How do I get my inflation stimulus check?
The good news is that there’s no work to be done on your end, aka you don’t even have to apply for the stimulus check. Rather, the process for receiving the payment will be automatic without the need for additional paperwork from you.
The Department of Taxation and Finance will look at information on residents’ 2024 tax return to determine eligibility. Those who match the numbers above–an income of $150,000 for single New Yorkers and $300,000 for married New Yorkers who filed jointly–will automatically receive the inflation stimulus checks.
When do I get my inflation stimulus check?
As for when will we get our inflation stimulus checks, payments will begin arriving in late 2025, so long as you live in New York and filed your tax return correctly and on time. Notifications will be sent directly to residents who qualify for the payment.
