We know the first 7pm sunset of the season is less than two weeks away, and the spring equinox is less than three weeks away. But when is the next Daylight Savings time? Now is the time to adjust the clocks, folks.
Sure, Mother Nature has been messing with us New Yorkers as of late — warm one minute, frigid the next — but we assure you signs of spring are near, and Daylight Savings is proof (even though we though we were doing away with the whole tradition, anyway). For more info about when to set clocks forward or back, and how we’ll be affected by the longstanding tradition, read on.
When is the next Daylight Savings Time?
Daylight Savings Time will take place on Sunday, March 9th, 2025, and again on Sunday, November 2nd, 2025.
Do we gain an hour in March?
Spring ahead, fall behind. We’ll need to set the clocks one hour forward on March 9th, meaning we’ll lose an hour. (Fear not sleepyheads: we’ll gain an hour in November.)
Why was Daylight Savings Time created?
According to the U.S. Department of Defense, Daylight Savings Time dates back to March 19th, 1918 to help add additional daylight hours and offset energy costs during World War I. There have been plenty of times throughout history when farmers were the ones credited with this change to have more daylight while out in the field, but in actuality, it was not up to them.
Will Daylight Savings go away?
Remember the whole Daylight Savings debacle? Some want it to vanish, others want to keep it in place. In 2022, the Sunshine Protection Act made the tradition a permanent standard across the country, but the bill sat in Congress. It was reintroduced a year later, but there hasn’t been a vote on it. Now, according to AccuWeather, once the federal government approves, states will be able to decide individually how to proceed with the tradition.
For the time being, pun intended, we’re keeping the system in place. Don’t forget to have a look at all of the fabulous things to do this March, regardless of the time!
