What’s open on Juneteenth in NYC
Schools
Schools across the city and state are closed in honor of Juneteenth, which was first recognized as a statewide holiday in 2020. Students first got off for the occasion in 2021.
At the time, Former NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio said, “Every city worker and every student will have an opportunity to reflect on the meaning of our history and the truth, and to think about the work that we have to do ahead.”
Mail will not be delivered on Juneteenth. Mail will resume on Friday, June 20th, the summer solstice. Post offices will be closed.
Transit
The MTA will be operating on a normal weekday schedule, so you can expect a typical commute.
Banks & the Stock Market
Considering banks follow the Federal Reserve System’s holiday schedule, and Juneteenth is one of them, you should expect your local branch to be closed.
Additionally, the Stock Market will observe the holiday.
UPS & FedEx
Both UPS and FedEx run independently from the government and will proceed with operations.
The DMV
If you’ve been putting off that REAL ID, Juneteenth won’t be the time to snag one: the DMVs are closed.
Trash Collection
There will be no trash, Curbside Composting, or recycling collection, according to the NYC Department of Sanitation.
Per the DOS: Residents who normally receive Thursday trash or Curbside Composting collection may place their material at the curb Thursday evening, for collection beginning Friday, June 20.
Additionally, residents who normally receive Thursday recycling collection should hold their paper, metal, glass, plastic, and carton recycling for a week, and place their material at the curb the evening of Wednesday, June 25, for collection Thursday, June 26.
Stores
Chain stores will be open, but should you be shopping at a local business in NYC, it’s best to call ahead to check their hours of operation; some small businesses have altered their schedules in years past for the holiday.
Attractions
Should there be a museum or venue you’re planning to visit, call the location before making a stop. Though locales are most likely to remain open, it’s best to call ahead.
