The well-known upstate New York chain, Wegmans Food Market, will open their first location within the five boroughs later this year.
In the fall, a 74,000-square-foot Wegmans outpost will open in Brooklyn’s Navy Yard, in the Admirals Row development on Flushing Avenue. The shop will include an in-store market cafe with a seating area for 100, along with a second floor mezzanine that will feature a bar which will serve food, wine, beer, and spirits.
The new grocery store will fill 500 job positions with 150 of them being full time—from entry-level management to customer service, overnight grocery, and culinary roles like chefs and line cooks—and they’re gearing up to begin the hiring process. In a statement put out by the supermarket, they plan to hire a majority of the employees locally. The Brooklyn Store Manager Kevin Cuff, who began working for Wegmans 21 years ago when he was 16 years old, said:
“Here at Wegmans, you drive your own development and the opportunities are truly what you make of them,” said Brooklyn Store Manager Kevin Cuff, who began working for Wegmans 21 years ago when he was 16 years old. “You are more than just a number. You are a family member who has a voice and an opportunity to do whatever it is you are passionate about.”
Wegman’s was second on Fortune‘s list of “The 100 Best Companies to Work For” in 2018 and has been at the top for over two decades. The chain plans to open three locations in 2019 along the east coast in Virginia, North Carolina, and New York.
