If you ever feel shit about yourself living in your shoebox apartment with no closet, just remind yourself that you actually live in the wealthiest city in the world. Sooo, technically by osmosis, you’re practically rich!
According to Henley & Partners’ World’s Weathiest Cities Report 2024, New York City is the wealthiest city in the world with 349,000 millionaires.
Henley & Partners’ annual ranking utilizes data from New World Wealth, an independent wealth research firm, to determine their reports. New World Wealth has an in-house database of over 150,000 high-net-worth persons. According to Henley & partners, “the database’s primary focus is on company founders (50%+ of the database) and individuals from high-value companies who hold the following positions: chairperson, CEO, president, director, and managing partner.”
Just behind NYC in the ranking is another U.S. spot: the San Francisco Bay Area (including San Francisco and Silicon Valley). This West Coast region has 305,700 millionaires and 68 billionaires—8 more billionaires than NYC! Out of the entire list of the top 50 ranking wealthiest cities in the world, only NYC and the Bay Area have more than 300,000 millionaires. Millionaires are defined as those obtaining USD 1 million or more of liquid investable wealth.
Tokyo takes the title of the third wealthiest city in the world with 298,300 millionaires. Singapore and London round out the remaining top five wealthiest cities in the world.
Other U.S. cities that made the list include Los Angeles (#6), Chicago (#12), Houston (#17), Dallas (#22), Seattle (#26), Boston (#30), Miami (#33), Austin (#35), and Washington D.C. (#41). You can see the full top 50 list of the wealthiest cities in the world here.
