One of the greatest feelings in air travel (sorry to everyone we’ve ever had as a seatmate) is settling into your row, glancing over…and realizing no one claimed the middle seat. Suddenly the flight feels infinitely more luxurious without spending an extra dime.
Now, United is taking that little moment of luck and turning it into an actual booking option. The airline’s newest seating perk guarantees an open middle seat in select Economy Plus rows, though it does raise one very important question: does it still feel as magical when it’s planned instead of a happy surprise? If it means extra elbow room on a long flight, we’d argue the answer is probably yes.
United’s new Economy Plus seats guarantee an open middle seat
Beginning later this year, United will begin selling a brand-new Economy Plus seating option on its upcoming Airbus A321XLR aircraft. Instead of squeezing three passengers into a row, these specially designed seats leave the middle seat permanently open, transforming it into a shared space complete with a large built-in table.
The airline says every one of its 50 new A321XLR aircrafts will feature one of these dedicated rows, making United the first U.S. airline to offer a seating option like this.
What passengers get with the new seating option
The biggest perk is obvious: no middle-seat neighbor.
But the experience goes beyond simply having more personal space. The open middle seat features a custom table stretching from armrest to armrest, giving passengers a convenient place to work, eat, or keep personal items within easy reach. The table also includes built-in cup holders and a soft leather-like finish.
Passengers will also continue to receive the standard Economy Plus benefits, including three extra inches of legroom, making these seats especially appealing for longer domestic and international flights.
When you’ll be able to book the new seats
United says the new seating option will go on sale later this year, with flights launching shortly afterward.
The seats will debut aboard the airline’s new Airbus A321XLR fleet, which is expected to begin domestic service later this fall before expanding to international routes in early 2027.
The airline has not yet announced pricing but says additional details will be released before bookings officially open.
The new seats are part of United’s biggest cabin upgrades yet
The open-middle-seat concept is just one of several premium upgrades arriving on United’s newest aircraft.
The Airbus A321XLR will also feature:
- All-aisle-access United Polaris suites with privacy doors
- United Premium Plus seating
- 4K OLED seatback entertainment screens with Bluetooth connectivity
- Larger overhead bins
- A snack station in the rear economy cabin
The announcement follows United’s recently unveiled Relax Row, another upcoming economy innovation that transforms multiple seats into a couch-like, lie-flat surface for eligible passengers beginning in 2027.
As airlines continue looking for ways to make economy travel more comfortable, United is betting that sometimes the biggest luxury isn’t champagne or a lie-flat seat—it’s simply never having to fight over the middle armrest again.
