For the first time in nearly 25 years, seeing off loved ones directly at the departure gate is making an official comeback.
A newly launched federal initiative is officially bringing back a long-lost air travel tradition: walking your friends and family all the way to their gate—even if you aren’t flying anywhere yourself.
The Transportation Security Administration has debuted Gateside by TSA PreCheck, a program that grants non-ticketed visitors access to secure terminal areas past checkpoint screening.
Whether you want to surprise a friend during a long layover, grab dinner at a terminal restaurant, or share a proper goodbye at the gate, non–passengers can now enter secure airport zones without buying a flight.
Here is everything you need to know about who qualifies and how to reserve a pass.

What is Gateside by TSA PreCheck?
For years, the security checkpoint has essentially marked the end of the airport for anyone who isn’t actually flying. Gateside is changing that for a limited group of travelers.
The new program allows eligible people without plane tickets to apply for access to the secure side of participating airports. Once approved, visitors can enter through a TSA PreCheck lane using an acceptable form of identification, giving them access to the gates and other areas beyond security.

Who is eligible to go past security without a flight?
Unlike general airport visitor pass trials, Gateside by TSA PreCheck is targeted at trusted traveler program members. To qualify for gate access, visitors must:
- Hold an active TSA PreCheck membership or possess a valid Known Traveler Number (KTN) through Global Entry or NEXUS.
- Submit an online application 1 to 3 days prior to their intended airport visit.
- Present a valid government-issued ID at the security checkpoint upon arrival.
Approved passes are valid for one calendar day, allowing visitors to enter and re-enter the secure terminal area on that day.

How to request your free visitor pass
To take advantage of the program, eligible participants must reserve their entry in advance:
- Visit the official TSA Gateside application portal between 24 and 72 hours before your planned arrival.
- Enter your personal details alongside your Known Traveler Number (KTN).
- Once approved, present your digital confirmation pass and ID at the dedicated TSA PreCheck lane.
The program is free to apply for and is expected to expand across major metropolitan airport hubs nationwide over the coming months.
