NYC’s beloved seasonal restaurant and beach club Gitano will reopen just in time to enjoy the city’s warmer weather on Monday, May 1st!
After opening in a brand new, on-brand location (Governors Island) last year, the 27,000-square-foot waterfront restaurant and beach lounge will surely be the ultimate summer destination.
Once called “Gitano Garden of Love” and located in SoHo for four years, the Mexican-inspired escape changed their name to “Gitano Island” after relocating on Governors Island with a five year lease.
They even brought in 12 truckloads of sand plus 500 tropical plants and palm trees to complete the beachy feel!
Spanish for “gypsy,” Gitano captures the essence of free spirits, wanderers and wonderers, bohemians, and diverse and inclusive creatives, which is easily seen in their ambiance and decor.
New this year, will be a reimagined menu by Executive Chef Antonio Maldonaldo. Diners will be able to indulge in modern Mexican dishes including: black truffle mushroom sopes, cashew snap peas, lobster tostada, Baja California kampachi with grilled avocado tostada, duck carnitas huarache, lubina in corn husk, and short rib birria.
The Governors Island iteration is comprised of a restaurant combined with a beach club, offering sun beds and cabanas, a giant disco ball reflecting the New York Harbor, and a stage for DJs and other live performances.
A black dining tent boasts a gorgeous marble bar, twin dining pergolas, and an open-fired kitchen.
“We are humbled and proud that over 54,000 guests chose to hop on a boat and visit us last year! We are looking forward to seeing even more guests this season, opening earlier and having added many new elements that will create an elevated, completely unique and incredibly exciting experience for our guests,” said James Gardner, CEO & Founder of Grupo Gitano.
Gitano Island is located on Governors Island, a five-minute boat ride from Casa Cipriani, Downtown NYC, Pier 6 Brooklyn Bridge, or the Red Hook/Atlantic Basin in Brooklyn. Find it at 125 Carder Rd., a short ways down from the newly opened QC NY Spa.
