Tompkins Square Park is gearing up for a significant transformation.
The parks committee of an East Village community board recently backed a nearly $10 million renovation plan.
The project aims to modernize aging facilities while adding much-needed environmental protections to the area.
What is changing in the park?
The parks department presented a sweeping proposal to revitalize several beloved recreation areas.
The city will construct a new, in-ground miniature pool for kids featuring improved infrastructure. Additionally, the department will completely renovate the ’90s-era outdoor gym.
The aging fitness equipment will be replaced with safer, high-quality materials that are accessible to people with disabilities.
Following community requests, the area’s half basketball court will be preserved.
Crucial eco-friendly upgrades
Beyond surface-level improvements, the project includes a major environmental overhaul.
The city will install large detention basins underneath the renovated basketball courts.
This hidden infrastructure will drastically improve storm runoff and actively prevent sewage from flowing into the East River during heavy rainstorms.
Expected timeline
The parks department anticipates the construction will take approximately 18 months to complete.
The project has already secured funding from both the mayor and the governor.
The committee will bring its final resolution to the full community board at its next meeting to push the renovation forward.
