Let’s rewind, or backpedal.
Picture forty miles of New York City streets, usually humming with engines and horns, completely silent and open only to the rhythmic whir of bicycle chains and the cheers of fellow riders.
On Sunday, May 3rd, the TD Five Boro Bike Tour returns, offering an unparalleled perspective of the city we love. Whether you’re a seasoned cyclist or a casual cruiser, the ride is a celebration of community, movement, and the magic of the five boroughs.
The History: A New York Tradition
What started in 1977 with just 250 participants has blossomed into the largest charitable bike ride in the United States.
For nearly five decades, the TD Five Boro Bike Tour has championed the idea that the streets belong to the people. It’s survived storms, heatwaves, and the changing face of the city, remaining a steadfast beacon for cycling advocacy and urban exploration.
The proceeds fund Bike New York’s free bike education programs.
These initiatives teach thousands of New Yorkers—children and adults alike—how to ride safely, how to maintain their bikes, and how to advocate for better cycling infrastructure in their own neighborhoods.

The Route: 40 Miles, Zero Cars
The magic of the Tour lies in its path. Starting in Lower Manhattan, the route takes you through the diverse neighborhoods of Manhattan, the Bronx, Queens, and Brooklyn, before a triumphant finish on Staten Island.

Getting to the Start Line
With 32,000 riders, logistics are key! Here’s how to arrive stress-free:
- By Bike: The purest way to arrive! Use the Hudson River Greenway or Broadway to reach the Start Area at Bowling Green.
- Staten Island Ferry: If you’re staying on Staten Island, park there and take the free ferry to Manhattan. It’s a great way to warm up your legs.
- Public Transit: The LIRR and Metro-North have suspended bike permit rules for the day, making it easy to bring your wheels in from the suburbs. Just remember to bring a bungee cord to secure your bike on the train!
Know Before You Ride
Before you pump up your tires, here are the essentials for a smooth Tour morning:
- Safety First: Helmets are non-negotiable. No helmet, no ride, no exceptions!
- Rider Identification Kits: Your bib, bike plate, and helmet cover are your “golden tickets.” They grant you access to the route, the rest areas, and the legendary Finish Festival.
- Bag Policy: To keep everyone safe and moving, the Tour has a strict bag policy. Leave the backpacks and panniers at home. Small bags under 420 cubic inches (6.9 liters) without shoulder straps are your best bet.
