A century-old Chinatown landmark is getting a bold new life.
Fashion designer Alexander Wang and his mother, entrepreneur Ying Wang, have transformed a historic Beaux Arts bank building at 58 Bowery into The Wang Contemporary (TWC), a new cultural hub dedicated to Asian and Asian-American creativity.
The newly opened space reimagines the landmarked domed building–originally constructed in 1924 and designated a landmark in 2011–as a platform for exhibitions, performances, and public programs in the heart of Manhattan’s Chinatown.
Purchased by Alexander and Ying Wang in spring 2025 for roughly $10 million, the building now marks a historic milestone: for the first time in more than 100 years, the property is owned by Chinese Americans.
And instead of bank vaults and deposit slips, the seven-story space will now house artists, performances, and cultural programming.
A Landmark Chinatown Building Gets a Second Life
Long embedded in Chinatown’s cultural landscape, the building at 58 Bowery sits prominently at the corner of Bowery and Canal Streets–a symbolic gateway into one of New York City’s most historic neighborhoods.
Inside, the soaring interior is framed by four monumental arches, each inscribed with the words wisdom, safety, thrift, and success; ideals once promised to early 20th-century depositors.

Now, the former bank has been reimagined as what the Wangs call a beacon of creative capital, and a space where Asian and Asian-American artists can experiment, collaborate, and present work across disciplines. The Wang Contemporary will host:
- Art exhibitions
- Performances
- Cultural programs
- Public events
Some programming–including future events planned for AAPI Heritage Month in May–will be free as part of the center’s affordability mission.
A Mother-Son Vision
The project is a collaboration between Alexander Wang and his mother Ying Wang, who each bring very different creative backgrounds.
Alexander launched his fashion label in 2005 after studying at Parsons School of Design. What began as a knitwear collection quickly grew into a global brand spanning ready-to-wear, accessories, and footwear.
Ying Wang, meanwhile, is part of China’s first generation of post-reform entrepreneurs and has spent decades working in manufacturing and international trade. She has also focused on building cultural platforms, including VIA 1221, an arts hub she developed inside a former Shanghai toy factory in 2022.

Together, the duo created The Wang Contemporary with a shared goal: building a permanent space dedicated to Asian creative voices. Their vision is simple–future generations of Asian artists shouldn’t have to fight for visibility. They should already have a place to belong.
The First Exhibition
Programming kicked off on February 20 with a Lunar New Year tribute featuring the installation 20,000 Variations On A Paper Plane In Flight.
Created by art collective MSCHF, the installation filled the central dome with red and gold paper planes that descended once every hour alongside a live-evolving piano composition.
Though the debut exhibition has already closed, more programming is expected throughout the year.
