Looking to swap city views in exchange for stunning natural scenery? Well living in New York gives us tons of opportunities to do just that by chasing waterfalls–this hidden part of Central Park is full of them, this fiery one is the only one of its kind in the world, and this one you can even swim in!
And if you were to hop in the car and drive just about five hours upstate you’d eventually find Taughannock Falls, the tallest single-drop waterfall east of the Rocky Mountains!
One of upstate New York’s most treasured natural spaces, more than 560,000 visitors take to Taughannock Falls each year to take in breathtaking views as the water plunges down a whopping 215 feet past rocky cliffs that tower nearly 400 feet above the gorge.
And yes, that means it’s 33 feet taller than Niagara Falls!
There are two great spots to view the falls:
- Taughannock Falls Overlook: picturesque views from a lookout point
- Taughannock Falls Gorge Trail: up-close look at the falls via an easy 1.8 mile trail
The falls are located in Taughannock Falls State Park. If you’d like to stick around for more than just viewing the falls, the park also allows for camping, fishing, hiking, boat rentals, and more. In the winter there’s also sledding and snowshoeing available.
