This whimsical NYC bookstore lets you trade 5 used books for a jar of pickles — and it just opened a rare book shop next door

A pickle for your thoughts? Or your reading material, that is.

At Sweet Pickle Books on Orchard Street, five used books will buy you a jar of pickles.

The Lower East Side shop has moved 150,000 jars of dills and sweets since opening six years ago, turning brine into local currency.

Owner Leigh Altshuler conceived the store as a tribute to her family and the neighborhood’s specific commercial heritage.

Just as the city has a dedicated flower district and garment district, the Lower East Side once served as the epicenter of the local pickling trade. Altshuler chose pickles to connect her business with the area’s past.

The shop’s defining feature is its book swap, which operates on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Customers who bring in five used books receive a jar of pickles in return. The bartering system gained traction almost immediately.

Even before the shop formally advertised the exchange, visitors would arrive with random goods, hoping to trade them for a jar. Altshuler recalls one woman who came in weekly carrying a briefcase loaded with VHS and cassette tapes to see if they could be swapped for pickles.

Scaling Up and Spreading Out

In the beginning, Altshuler prepared all the shop’s pickles inside her own apartment.

As the book and pickle operation grew over the last six years, production exceeded her home kitchen’s capacity. The pickles are now professionally jarred and batched for the store to keep up with the swap program and direct retail sales.

The operation recently expanded into the storefront next door, opening a sister shop named Rare, Fine, & Fancy.

The new space is dedicated to first editions and special printings that require more room to breathe than the densely packed shelves of the original used bookshop.

Alongside the rarer texts, the annex carries stationery, vintage ephemera, and more jars of the shop’s signature pickles.
