With the way the weather has been testing our “New Yorker tough” as of late, daydreaming about warmer days is practically a survival tactic. Fortunately, Capital One City Parks Foundation SummerStage is stepping in to personally escort us out of the seasonal blues and into a 40th anniversary summer for the history books.
The festival is dealing with this cold with a level of delusion we can certainly get behind: by fast forwarding right past it and announcing its milestone 2026 season.
Honestly, the announcement alone is enough to make the wait for summer feel almost poetic. Here’s everything you need to know about the blowout 40th anniversary celebration.

What is SummerStage?
SummerStage is New York’s premier free outdoor performing arts festival. Every year, it transforms neighborhood parks into world-class venues–spotlighting everything from jazz and hip-hop to indie and contemporary dance–with a strong commitment to uplifting underrepresented voices, particularly female artists.
Each season, SummerStage presents more than 70 free and benefit shows in Central Park and 12-15 additional neighborhood parks, drawing over 227,000 fans.
The Legacy:
- Founded: June 1986 at the Naumburg Bandshell with avant-garde Afrofuturists Sun Ra Arkestra
- Impact: over 7 million fans reached across four decades
- Scope: 70+ shows annually across 12-15 neighborhood parks

Joe Killian, SummerStage Founder & Executive Producer (1986-1993) and City Parks Foundation Board Member, stated:
SummerStage was created to reflect the extraordinary diversity of New York City and its people…It has always been about bringing people together and a shared joy of community among fans.

Planning Your Visit
When is SummerStage 2026?
Though the calendar has not yet been released for this season, it’ll likely take place May through October.
Where are the shows?
Performances will take place in all five boroughs. While Rumsey Playfield in Central Park remains the home base, the festival will also travel to neighborhood staples.
How to get tickets
The vast majority of shows are free and open to the public on a first-come, first-served basis. However, “Benefit Shows” (which fund the free programming) require a ticket. An official schedule will be released closer to the season start.

We can’t wait to share what’s in store for our 40th SummerStage anniversary season. We’ve been working hard to curate a lineup that features iconic artists and longtime friends of the festival as well as fresh, new voices that make our festival as diverse and vibrant as the communities we serve.
