In a city as vibrant as New York, there’s learning experiences everywhere. From city kids navigating the subway like a pro, to constant exposure to arts and culture everywhere they turn, there are few greater launchpads.
As New Yorkers grow, decisions like which high school to attend looms, especially when thinking about college and other future opportunities, both in the city and beyond.
According to rankings and studies by Niche, PolarisList, NYC-SIFT and more, NYC is home to the most difficult high school to get into in the US, and it’s also ranked as the best high school in New York for the 2024-2025 school year.
About Stuyvesant High School
Founded in 1904, Stuyvesant High School is the crown jewel of New York City’s specialized high schools. Located in Battery Park City, its glass-walled building overlooks the Hudson River, but the focus inside is strictly on the stratosphere of academic achievement.
Admission to Stuyvesant is based solely on a single metric: the Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT).
There are no interviews, no portfolios, and no look at middle school grades. Each year, roughly 30,000 students vie for about 800 seats, making the acceptance rate lower than that of many Ivy League universities.
Stuyvesant is renowned for its rigorous focus on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), though its humanities and music programs are equally formidable.
- The Facility: The ten-story building features high-tech robotics labs, a swimming pool, and specialized research facilities that rival small colleges.
- The Alumni Network: To walk the halls of Stuy is to follow in the footsteps of four Nobel Laureates, various world-class musicians, and leaders in tech and government.
Beyond the Classroom
Stuyvesant hosts over 100 student-run clubs and a legendary theater program known as STUYCO. It’s a place where the city’s brightest minds find their “tribe,” forming bonds through the shared experience in the most competitive academic environment in the nation.
