Storm King Art Center, Hudson Valley’s beloved 500-acre outdoor museum, is reopening this Wednesday, May 7th, after $53 million in renovations. If you’re in need of a day trip from NYC, consider this your reason to get out of town.
Home to large-scale sculptures among gorgeous hills and vistas, this upstate sanctuary has long been a go-to destination for those stationed across the east coast (and beyond). Now art and nature lovers have more to look forward to upon their trip: a new visitor area, a conservation and fabrication building, efficient parking, and an additional five acres of exhibits to explore.
Over 155 artists have work on display on the grounds, and the collection ranges consists of contemporary pieces range from “site-specific earthworks, to related drawings and photographs — to create a dynamic and unique place to explore art in nature,” according to the attraction.
All about the Storm King Art Center reopening
“I am thrilled to welcome visitors back to Storm King as we unveil the completed capital project and open an exciting exhibition season,” said Storm King Executive Director Nora Lawrence. “This project has resulted in thoughtfully designed spaces that elevate and enhance what Storm King does best – provide people with a singular experience of art in nature.”
Upon the museum’s reopening, Kevin Beasley’s “PROSCENIUM| Rebirth / Growth: The Watch / Harvest / Dormancy: On Reflection (2024–25)” will be on display. The site-specific installation, four triptychs, is meant to represent nature’s four season. It’s considered to be his largest work to date, totaling 100 long by 11 feet tall.
The marriage of both art and nature in this upcoming exhibit, as well as fan-favorite installations, is something you’ll have to see to believe.
“Storm King Art Center combines world-class art and culture with one of the most beautiful landscapes in the world,” Governor Kathy Hochul said in a statement. “With this incredible expansion of Storm King Art Center, Hudson Valley will benefit from increased tourism, expanded opportunities for growth and the restorative power of art and culture.”
