The Garment District Alliance is unveiling a brand new interactive sound and light installation on Thursday, September 14, titled Echoes – A Voice from Unchartered Waters. The masterpiece features a majestic steel whale, spanning 55 feet long.
Onlookers will be captivated by the public installation’s sound and light effects that touch upon the impacts of everyday activities have on the environment.
The ginormous whale was made by artist, designer and researcher Mathias Gmachl and is a co-production of the Quartier des Spectacles Partnership with MuseumsQuartier Wien and the LAC Lugano Arte e Cultura.
Echoes – A Voice from Unchartered Waters will be unveiled on Thursday, September 14 on the Broadway plazas in the Garment District between 38th and 39th Streets. It will be on view through November 13, 2023. The Garment District advises people to visit the whale at night to fully experience the illuminated effects.
Bringing a “serene ambiance to the Garment District & [sparking] conversations about the planet,” the completely free installation is in part of Garment District Art on the Plazas. The year-round program is through the Department of Transportation’s Art Program.
