NYC’s favorite lady, The Lady Of Liberty, has had a makeover over the years. See, the iconic verdigris hue came about accidentally, as a byproduct of carelessness. The Statue of Liberty, as you probably know, is made of copper. However, untreated copper slowly develops a coating called “patina.” This layer actually protects the Statue of Liberty’s copper layer, which is only two pennies thick, from deteriorating.
