This isn’t the first art installation depicting claims made by President Trump to appear in NYC. A second mural had to be created after the original installation in Brooklyn was defaced.
On October 4, the first “Wall of Lies” depicting 20,000 misleading claims from Trump over his presidency, fact-checked by the Washington Post, went up outside Pine Box Shop in Bushwick, Brooklyn. The installation was 50 feet by 10 feet, stretching along the sidewalk in a color-coded fashion.
Every claim had been organized in chronological order from the fact-checkers at the Washington Post. Radio Free Brooklyn, a nonprofit organization providing active learning in media practices for underserved Brooklyn communities, who put up the mural, said the color-coded display is categorized with pink for environment, green for coronavirus, blue for immigration, purple for crime, yellow for Russia, and so on.
Not long after the mural was put up, was it found vandalized and spray painted overnight with the words “Vote Trump or Die” and “Stand Back, Stand By,” referencing a comment the President made about The Proud Boys during the first presidential debate this year.
The mural organizers then created a GoFundMe campaign to support a second installment that can now be found on the corner of Lafayette and Grand Streets. After receiving ample donations, the SoHo mural, which is now double the original size, at 100-feet long, opened for viewing on October 24. There was even a special performance that day by Kosha Dillz.
Tom Tenney, the executive director of Radio Free Brooklyn, and one of the creators of the mural, alongside Phil Buehler, Bushwick photograher, originally thought of doing a 24/7 broadcast on Radio Free Brooklyn of the President’s claims, he told BKReader, but due to the pandemic they rerouted.
The mural is set to remain up until Election Day, this November 3rd, and an interactive version is even available on Radio Free Brooklyn’s website so viewers can zoom in and read each claim.
