Autumn in New York is made for moviegoing, and this season, MoMA is inviting audiences to step into the dreamlike worlds of Sofia Coppola. The museum is honoring one of contemporary cinema’s most distinctive voices—and this year’s MoMA Film Benefit honoree—with a fall series that spans her full career.
From her haunting 1999 debut, The Virgin Suicides, to her latest 2023 feature Priscilla, this series offers a rare opportunity to see Coppola’s films on the big screen—including five 35mm prints from MoMA’s collection. Known for her meditative, atmospheric storytelling, Coppola explores the inner worlds of young women caught between routine and revelation.
As she once reflected, “Across all my films, there is a common quality: there is always a world and there is always a girl trying to navigate it. That’s the story that will always intrigue me.” (Sofia Coppola Archive) In this series, audiences can trace that curiosity across nearly every corner of her filmography.
What to Watch: From The Virgin Suicides to Lost in Translation

From the haunting suburban girls of The Virgin Suicides to the lonely, wistful Charlotte in Lost in Translation, Coppola’s films follow young women navigating desire, identity, and isolation. In Marie Antoinette, she brings Kirsten Dunst’s royal ennui to life with style and melancholy, while The Bling Ring captures a different kind of longing in the glittering obsession with fame.
Fans can catch the following titles all the way through November 15:
- The Virgin Suicides (1999)
- Lost In Translation (2003)
- Marie Antoinette (2006)
- Somewhere (2010)
- The Bling Ring (2013)
